Coach allegedly told players who hit referee ‘this guy needs to pay’

John Jay referee

John Jay High School assistant football coach Mack Breed was placed on administrative leave Tuesday as a result of his alleged role in two players targeting a helpless referee during a game Friday night.

The San Antonio-Express News reports that Breed has been accused of encouraging players to target the official.

“This guy needs to pay for cheating us,” Breed allegedly told the team.

The Northside Independent School District said the players are believed to have tackled the referee, Robert Watts, over some missed calls. According to NISD athletic director Stan Laing, the players accused Watts of using racial slurs.

The incident is still under investigation. For those who have not seen the video of the players tackling the official, you can watch it here. The two students, sophomore Victor Rojas and senior Mike Moreno, have been suspended from the team.

Several prominent attorneys and former football officials believe criminal charges should be filed against the players. Austin Football Officials Association secretary Wayne Elliott told ESPN.com that Watts is “very upset” and wants to press charges.
