Colin Kaepernick slams reports about fight with Aldon Smith

Colin Kaepernick on Wednesday addressed the reports last week that said he and Aldon Smith were fighting, and he slammed the integrity of those who reported the news.

Smith was released by the 49ers on Friday, hours after news of his third DUI arrest was made public. Later came a report from TMZ saying that Kaepernick and Smith got into a fight at practice earlier in the week. They also referenced that there might be some beef between the two because Kap supposedly is now dating Smith’s ex-girlfriend. The girlfriend report came from Media TakeOut, which also said Smith crashed into the QB’s Mercedes.

“If I was a reporter, I’d go about things logically,” Kaepernick said Wednesday via CSN Bay Area. “I’d realize I have a deal with Jaguar. I’ve had it for a few years now. So I wouldn’t be driving a Mercedes. I’d also realize we didn’t have practice on Thursday, so no one was at the facility.

“Along those lines, anyone that believes that and goes about that reporting that is just doesn’t have the best integrity, in my mind. To try to prey on athletes’ livelihoods while one is going through a tough time is embarrassing to me.

“For people who do report that and put that out there and jumped on that bandwagon just to get internet clicks and attention to their website or reports, it really is embarrassing that people do that.”

As someone who gets internet clicks and attention off stories like that, allow me to poke holes in Kaepernick’s story. For one, TMZ said the fight at practice happened on Tuesday, not Thursday, so he’s just wrong there. Plus, it’s quite possible that the fight was just an ordinary training camp skirmish. In that regard I can completely buy that reports of the fight were simply overstated. However, I do believe there is validity to MTO’s report that Kap is now dating Smith’s ex, Nessa. I never once mentioned the Mercedes part because there was zero confirmation of that item.

Kaepernick never comments about his dating life and keeps it out of the media’s eye, so why would you expect him to actually confirm gossip reports? There’s no way he would. I absolutely believe there was some tension between them, though I doubt that had much to do with Smith’s release; his DUI arrest is why they cut him. The gossip about Kap dating Smith’s ex is just a juicy item.
