Colin Kaepernick named Week 6 starter for 49ers

Colin Kaepernick

Blaine Gabbert has finally played his way out of a starting job in San Francisco, as 49ers head coach Chip Kelly announced on Tuesday that Colin Kaepernick will start this week against the Buffalo Bills.

There has been speculation that Kaepernick, whose contract is guaranteed for injury, has agreed to a restructured deal with the team. However, Kelly denied that Kaepernick’s contract has had any impact on the current quarterback depth chart.

While Kelly has been saying for weeks that Kaepernick is not in game shape, it’s easy to understand why he could no longer throw his support behind Gabbert. The 49ers have lost four straight games since winning their opener, and Gabbert has thrown six interceptions compared to just four touchdowns during those losses.

One report indicated that some Niners players are growing frustrated with Kelly’s offense. It remains to be seen how different things will be with Kaepernick under center, but it can’t get much worse in San Francisco than it is at the moment.
