Colin Kaepernick says he is waiting for ‘next opportunity’ to be starter

Colin Kaepernick

Colin Kaepernick is still a football player at the end of the day, and despite all the other talk around him, he remains focused on waiting for his opportunity to take over and impress.

Kaepernick said on Wednesday that he’s just biding his time, and noted that the last time he started a season as a backup, he ended it by quarterbacking the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl.

“I have to wait my time and work,” Kaepernick said Wednesday, via Nick Wagoner of ESPN. “I’ve been in this position before. Last time I was in this position, I ended up in the Super Bowl, so I continue to work and prepare for when that next opportunity comes.”

Kaepernick knows he’s coming back from injury and is prepared to be patient and work up his strength after losing out to Blaine Gabbert for the starting job.

“That’s ultimately Chip’s decision,” Kaepernick said. “All I can do is focus on myself at this point and make sure I’m getting better.

“I think I will continue to improve and continue to get into my stride. It’s really only been about a month since I’ve been on the field, so there’s still some progressing to do, still some strength to get back, but I’ll continue to work.”

Despite all the controversy surrounding him, Kaepernick is still an NFL quarterback who has started a Super Bowl and is still on the roster. If Gabbert slips up, he’ll be hungrily waiting in the wings.
