Colin Kaepernick to undergo surgery for torn ligament in thumb

Colin Kaepernick

Colin Kaepernick will be going under the knife for the second time in the past two months.

According to CSN Bay Area’s Mindi Bach, Kaepernick will undergo surgery Wednesday morning to repair a torn ligament in his right hand.

Kaepernick initially suffered the thumb injury during a Thursday night loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 22. Though the San Francisco 49ers quarterback appeared on the injury report the following week, nothing was ever discovered regarding the extent of the injury. It was only due to continued discomfort that Kaepernick underwent an MRI recently, where the tear was found.

This is the second time that an injury Kaepernick had seemed to be missed or overlooked by the 49ers’ medical staff. He first complained about a shoulder issue in early October, but he continued to play for the team the next several weeks. It wasn’t until November that an MRI revealed a torn labrum in his shoulder.

Kaepernick already underwent surgery in Vail, Colo. for his shoulder in November. He will have surgery on the thumb at the Steadman Clinic, which also performed the shoulder surgery.
