Report: Colt McCoy can become free agent after season

Colt McCoy

Colt McCoy has been a member of the Washington Redskins since 2014, but there’s a chance that could change after the season.

Alex Smith’s injury last week not only opened the door for McCoy to start, but also is giving him a possibility to become a free agent.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday that McCoy has a clause in his contract that can void the final season of his deal, allowing him to become a free agent. If McCoy plays 25-30 percent of the season — which will happen if he plays the final six games for Washington — he would be able to decline the 2019 option on his contract with Washington, allowing him to become a free agent.

McCoy is set to earn $3.5 million next season, with $2 million guaranteed. He looked good enough in Washington’s loss to Houston last weekend where if he keeps it up, he could be on his way to making more money as a backup next season. McCoy has 27 touchdowns and 23 interceptions in his nine seasons in the league.
