Report: Colts still concerned about Andrew Luck’s shoulder

Andrew Luck

Andrew Luck is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2016 season, and Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay has said numerous times that he wants to sign the 26-year-old quarterback to a lucrative contract extension. Could Luck’s shoulder injury be holding things up?

Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole reported Wednesday that the Colts have some “long-term concern” about the condition of Luck’s shoulder. The shoulder injury is a big part of the reason Luck missed nine games last season. The team reportedly sent Luck to a specialist in January, and he has been rehabbing at Stanford since the season ended.

For what it’s worth, Stephen Holder of The Indianapolis Star spoke with a Colts source who was “dismissive” of Cole’s report. Holder notes that Luck had good velocity on his throws after he returned from the shoulder injury early in the 2015 season. He later suffered a lacerated kidney on a brutal hit from Danny Trevathan (video here) and also may have been playing through a rib injury that was more serious than initially believed. The kidney and rib injuries were of more concern to the Colts than the shoulder injury, according to Holder.

Even if the Colts are concerned about the condition of Luck’s shoulder, it’s a virtual certainty that he will re-sign with the team.
