Condoleezza Rice addresses report linking her to Browns’ head coach job

The Cleveland Browns are likely considering many options to fill their head coaching vacancy this offseason, but it has become clear that Condoleezza Rice is not among them.

On Sunday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Browns want to interview Rice as part of their head coaching search. The team was later complimentary of Rice but said she is not a candidate, and the former US Secretary of State also decided to address the report in a Facebook post.

Rice, a lifelong Browns fan, said she hopes the NFL starts considering women for coaching positions, but she is not ready to be one of them.

Rice has been heavily involved with college football, as she served on the College Football Playoff Committee from 2013 to 2016. The 64-year-old also sat on a commission that recommended major changes to college basketball that include doing away with the one-and-done rule, and she became one of the first female members to join Augusta National Golf Club back in 2012. Her background with sports is extensive.

It would have been very surprising if Rice was a legitimate contender to be Cleveland’s next head coach given some of the names we have heard linked to the job.
