Report: Cowboys interested in Brian Hoyer ‘at the right price’

Brian Hoyer

The Dallas Cowboys are in need of a veteran backup quarterback, and Brian Hoyer could be the answer.

Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that the Cowboys would have interest in Hoyer “at the right price.” However, it seems likely that the 30-year-old could get more money elsewhere than what Dallas is willing to pay.

Hoyer, who was released by the Houston Texans over the weekend, appeared in 11 games last season and 14 with the Cleveland Browns in 2014. Kellen Moore and Jameill Showers are the only quarterbacks currently on the Cowboys’ roster behind Tony Romo, and they have a combined three games of experience.

As Williams notes, Dallas chose not to sign Colt McCoy or Chase Daniel when they were free agents earlier this offseason. McCoy received $9 million over three years to stay with the Washington Redskins, while Daniel signed a three-year, $21 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles that includes $12 million guarantee. Hoyer will likely be seeking something that is valued between those two deals.

The Cowboys did very little right while Romo sat out with injuries last year. They ended up releasing Brandon Weeden, and Moore went 0-2 in his two starts and threw four touchdowns and six interceptions.

With multiple teams reportedly interested in Hoyer, the Cowboys will not exactly be able to get him at a bargain. Unless they really like him, they might end up passing.
