Stephen Jones: Cowboys will lean on running game to preserve Tony Romo

Tony Romo Cowboys

There may have been an added wrinkle to the Dallas Cowboys’ selection of running back Ezekiel Elliott at No. 4 overall in the NFL Draft – keeping Tony Romo healthy.

Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones said as much last week, saying that the Cowboys intend to rely on the running game more, partly in order to try to keep their veteran quarterback healthy.

“That’s exactly what we’re thinking,” Jones told Mighty 1090 AM in San Diego, via the Dallas Morning News. “Obviously run the football.

“At the end of the day it’s all about Tony’s health,” Jones continued. “We’ve got to keep him healthy. We did take a big pick in Ezekiel Elliott that I think really helps everybody. Not only going to help the rushing game, but because he is so gifted catching the ball out of the backfield, pass protection. I think all of that will do a lot to Tony and at the same time take a lot of the pressure off the defense in terms of controlling the ball like we did two years ago. We’re excited about where we sit right now as a team.”

Romo is said to be looking and feeling great after losing virtually all of 2015 to injury. The Cowboys will be desperate to keep it that way. They could be a playoff team with him, and as 2015 demonstrated, a last place team without him.
