Cowboys unlikely to play Tony Romo even if they rest Dak Prescott
The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly not planning to play Tony Romo even if they rest Dak Prescott and their other starters down the stretch.
Jerry Jones has said that the Cowboys are not planning to rest players in the event that they lock up the No. 1 in the NFC, but that could change in the final week or two of the season. But as Ian Rapoport of NFL Media noted Sunday, it won’t necessarily be Tony Romo time if Prescott gets a breather.
If #Cowboys have nothing to play for moving forward, will they rest their starters? Team source says “We’ll still play our guys.”

If #Cowboys take Dak Prescott off the field & out of harm’s way, it may not be Tony Romo coming in. DAL may keep him safe until necessary

Romo has reportedly looked sharp in practice, and he is obviously more valuable than the average backup quarterback. Should something happen to Prescott, the Cowboys would still be contenders with Romo back in the lineup. Jones already said the team is going to play it safe with Romo going forward, so bringing him on for mop-up duty doesn’t make much sense.
While the Cowboys don’t want to risk Prescott getting injured, they also want the rookie to continue getting reps. We know Prescott still has the ability to create headlines while sitting on the bench, but the Cowboys don’t want to mess up their mojo. They’re likely being honest when they say they don’t plan to rest starters.
