Report: Cowboys want protection in case Dez Bryant gets into trouble

Dez Bryant

The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly concerned that giving Dez Bryant too much money could make it more likely that he will get into trouble off the field.

According to Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole, one of the reasons contract talks between the Cowboys and Bryant have seemingly gone stale is that the team wants to be able to protect itself in the event that Bryant doesn’t keep his nose clean.

“They want to be able to get out of this deal if Dez Bryant gets in trouble,” Cole said Wednesday. “While Bryant has only had one major issue while he’s been with the Cowboys in five years, the Cowboys are extremely concerned that there could be a relapse — another incident. Something else could happen that could land him in jail or under the personal conduct policy, and they want safeguards on that.”

The “major issue” that Cole was referring to was Bryant’s 2012 arrest for misdemeanor family violence. Bryant, who was 23 at the time, allegedly assaulted his mother. You can see her talking to police about the incident in this video.

Cole added that the Cowboys also want to keep Bryant “on his toes,” meaning they think giving him too much money will allow him to spend too much and get out of control with his lifestyle.

I can see the Cowboys being hesitant to give Bryant $50 million guaranteed, but a lot of this sounds like a cop out. If they’re truly worried about Bryant getting in trouble because he’s rich, I don’t think guaranteeing him $20 million or so less is going to make a difference.

Now you can see why Bryant’s camp reportedly believes the Cowboys were behind the rumors about that video that was supposed to make Dez look worse than Ray Rice. What ever happened with that? Absolutely nothing.
