Danieal Manning spent nine years in the NFL — five with the Bears and the final four with the Texans. Last season, he appeared in 16 games and recorded 46 tackles. As it turns out, that will be his last action as a professional football player.

The 32-year-old announced on Tuesday that he is hanging up the cleats and stepping away from the game during an appearance on SportsRadio 610 in Houston. Manning became an unrestricted free agent earlier this year. However, instead of playing football next season, he is choosing to get a head-start on a career teaching others the game. The first step is getting a college degree, which Manning is planning to do.

“It’s time,” Manning said via the Houston Chronicle. “There wasn’t a particular reason other than I wanted to go back to school and earn my degree so I can start coaching.”

For his career, Manning recorded 549 tackles and 11 interceptions over 128 games. He was selected in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft.
