Darrelle Revis was reportedly critical of Geno Smith: ‘I own him’

Geno Smith Jets

If the New York Jets are unable to find some middle ground in their ongoing stalemate with Ryan Fitzpatrick, their next-best option for 2016 could be Geno Smith. Jets fans are terrified of that possibility, and Darrelle Revis might feel the same way.

Veteran wide receivers Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall have gotten a lot of attention for openly urging the Jets to re-sign Fitzpatrick. According to a report from Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Revis would have to have come a very long way to be considered a Smith supporter.

Prior to last season, Revis was reportedly unimpressed with Smith during practice. Revis even supposedly told his friends “I own him” when discussing Smith’s play.

That can’t be good.

Though Revis has owned a lot of people throughout his career, it’s a bad sign if he went around talking about how one of his own teammates was struggling. Granted, that was last year and Smith could have improved, but it doesn’t sound like anyone in the locker room is pulling for the former West Virginia star.

In addition to playing poorly, Smith was also at the center of an ugly locker room incident with a teammate less than a year ago. Fitzpatrick took the starting job after that and never looked back, leading the Jets to within one game of a playoff berth. It’s no surprise guys like Revis, Marshall and Decker — who don’t have many good seasons left — want to build off that momentum in 2016.
