Darrelle Revis says his continued struggles are because ‘I’m old’

Darrelle Revis

New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis has looked like anything but the once-dominant cornerback who earned the “Revis Island” nickname.

In Revis’s mind, the reason why is simple. And it’s not exactly something he can fix.

“Because I’m old,” Revis told Gary Myers of the New York Daily News when asked why he was having such a hard time with opposing receivers.

The 31-year-old went on to say that, while he’ll never be as good as he once was, he knows there is plenty of room for achievable improvement.

“You have bumps in the road,” Revis said. “Are you going to see a one catch for one yard game? Probably not. I was 23, 24 years old then. That’s just not where it’s at. Can I execute better and do things better? That’s going to come. That’s definitely going to come down the road.”

As for those who criticize his lack of production in light of his expensive contract, Revis believes that his resume speaks for itself.

“I think people look at the price tag and not the whole body of work on what I’ve done in this game,” Revis said. “It will be forever remembered. I’m not being cocky about it. The numbers are there. They show. I shut down some of the best of the best playing man-to-man coverage.”

The problem is that the Jets are paying Revis for what he can do now, not what he was capable of doing seven years ago. Even more alarmingly, this isn’t the first time he’s talked about the struggles he’s having with his age and his body.
