Darrelle Revis thought about retiring after knee injury in 2012

Darrelle Revis has recovered so well from his knee injury in 2012 that most people probably forget it even happened. Revis missed all but two games during the 2012 season with the New York Jets after tearing his ACL. The way he fought back is admirable, but that doesn’t mean the All-Pro cornerback was confident the entire time he was rehabbing.

In the latest issue of Sports Illustrated, Revis revealed that he contemplated retirement after injuring his knee.

“I did think about retiring,” he said, via Bernie Augustine of the New York Daily News. “I had never been seriously injured before, and I didn’t know how to handle it.”

Revis had some speed bumps with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013, but he was the Revis of old with the New England Patriots last season. It’s unclear if his slower (by his own standards) season with the Bucs was the result of his knee surgery or simply playing for a bad team.

As Eric Edholm of Shutdown Corner noted, Revis also revealed that he required microfracture surgery after tearing his ACL. The injury was a bit more serious than some other ligament injuries, which may have been one of the reasons Revis was so spooked by it.

In any event, Revis still looks as strong at age 30 as he did when he was a rookie. Whether he can be as effective in New York without Rex Ryan and manage to live up to one of his teammate’s predictions remains to be seen.
