Heading into the upcoming NFL season, fans of all teams are hopeful that their players are confident. If making the playoffs and winning a Super Bowl isn’t the goal, what’s the point of watching? The expectations of Jets fans are high enough, however. They probably don’t need people like D’Brickashaw Ferguson telling them how much potential the current roster has, but the Jets defensive tackle recently decided to preach about it anyway.
“We have an opportunity now to do something spectacular,” Ferguson told NFL.com’s Dave Dameshek earlier this week. “We still have Shonn Greene, he’s an excellent back. We have a great offensive line. We’re going to do some nice things this year. The focus should be on what’s gonna happen this year, and what’s in our power to do.
“We have greatness written all over us. It’s just a matter of time.”
Coming off an extremely disappointing 8-8 season that followed back-to-back AFC Championship appearances, the Jets have plenty to prove. They plan to incorporate Tim Tebow into the offense and other phases of the game and are hoping that will somehow help Mark Sanchez morph into the quarterback they’ve been looking for since they traded up to draft him four years ago. In many ways, it’s a do or die season for the current team.
While Ferguson was not exactly making any type of guarantee, it’s statements like this one that Rex Ryan has become known for and can get the team into trouble. There’s already enough pressure to succeed in New York. Saying the team has “greatness” written all over it probably isn’t going to help guys to relax.
