DeShone Kizer will reportedly be named Browns starting QB

DeShone Kizer

The Cleveland Browns have reportedly decided that they will roll with a rookie starting quarterback in Week 1 of the regular season.

Sources told Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com that Browns head coach Hue Jackson has named DeShone Kizer the team’s starting quarterback. The official announcement was expected to come at some point on Sunday.

Kizer wasn’t all that great in Saturday’s 13-9 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, completing just 6-of-18 passes for 93 yards and an interception. However, he apparently did nothing to change Jackson’s mind about giving him the job over Brock Osweiler, who did not appear in the game.

Browns coaches have said all offseason that Kizer is not ready to start at the NFL level, but that may have just been their way of trying to increase Osweiler’s trade value. Kizer has looked like Cleveland’s best quarterback in camp, and Jackson must feel he gives the team the best chance to win now. Time will tell if having the former Notre Dame star lead the team right away was a good choice.
