Doug Marrone’s former assistant Bob Casullo: Marrone is an ‘egomaniac’

Doug Marrone BillsWhen Doug Marrone decided to opt out of his contract with the Buffalo Bills, he may have lost his chance at being a head coach in the NFL. The New York Jets are reportedly off the list.

Seth Walder of the New York Daily News cites a source who claims Marrone was considered one of the front-runners for the Jets job but failed to impress the team during his interview.

“Marrone failed to close the deal in his interview,” the source reportedly said. “Considering he was a (supposed) front-runner, it appears Woody Johnson is doing his due diligence and considering more people.”

Bob Casullo, one of Marrone’s former Syracuse assistants, is not surprised that Marrone supposedly tanked. Casullo blasted Marrone during a radio interview with ESPN Syracuse on Monday.

“Self-centered, selfish, greedy,” Casullo said of Marrone, via the Daily News. “You’re re-shuffling an egomaniac, less than .500 coach.”

Casullo was the assistant head coach at Syracuse in 1999 and part of 2000 before he and Marrone abruptly parted ways with one game remaining in the season. Casullo said coming and going is Marrone’s style.

“When he takes a job, he already has his plan in place for his next job,” he said.

One of the reasons Marrone reportedly decided to step down as Bills head coach is he was unhappy with the draft-day trade the team made to acquire Sammy Watkins. Marrone may have even cost the Bills a shot at a reputable team president on his way out the door.

With only a handful of openings in the NFL this offseason, don’t be surprised if Marrone fails to find a home.
