Doug Pederson: Carson Wentz must learn to better protect himself
Carson Wentz has been extremely impressive since taking over as Eagles quarterback, but the Philadelphia coaching staff still sees a work in progress.
Case in point: Doug Pederson says that Wentz has to learn how to protect himself better and avoid taking hits.
“I think it’s hard to rewire him,” Pederson said, via Chris Wesseling of NFL Media. “I just think you need to constantly keep talking with him and showing him, going back and showing him those plays on tape and just making him aware and conscious of … I don’t need the extra yard right here.
“It’s OK to throw the ball away, it’s OK to step out of bounds or slide … not only for his longevity but obviously for the team as well. You want to make sure your quarterback, especially your starting quarterback, is the guy that’s protecting himself the most.”
Wentz missed eight games last season in college with a wrist injury and his preseason was cut short by a rib issue. The team no doubt loves the competitiveness, but it won’t do him any good if he can’t stay on the field.
