Doug Pederson: Sam Bradford has taken QB competition and run with it

Sam Bradford

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson continues to insist that Sam Bradford is in line to be the team’s starting quarterback when the 2016 regular season gets underway.

When asked on Friday if there is a competition between Bradford and rookie first-round pick Carson Wentz, Pederson was complimentary of both players. However, he said he expects Bradford to be the team’s starter and that he has already been “outstanding” in workouts.

There is some inconsistency to what the Eagles’ coaches are saying about the QB situation. Pederson and the front office have maintained that Bradford is going to be the starter, while another coach said that is in no way a guarantee. One Eagles reporter also observed that Wentz seems to be grasping Pederson’s offense more quickly than Bradford is.

Bradford has an early advantage in that he is a veteran and is being paid $22 million guaranteed on his new two-year contract. But if Wentz has been as good as people say, Bradford will likely be on a short leash starting Week 1.
