Report: Drew Brees, Saints close on contract extension

Drew Brees

Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints are close to reaching agreement on a contract extension, according to reports.

Brees’ current contract with the Saints expires after the season, and the team’s longtime quarterback has expressed interest in signing a new deal to remain in New Orleans. However, Brees insisted he would not negotiate going into the season. The deadline may have spurred some action as Pro Football Talk says the two sides are close to a deal.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reports the same.

Pro Football Talk says they have heard the deal could be in the same range as Andrew Luck’s contract, which is for around $25 million per season. That matches a previous report which said Brees was seeking a four-year, $100 million deal.

Despite being 37 years old, Brees has expressed interest in playing many more seasons, with his agent reportedly saying Brees wants to play five more years. Brees is showing no signs of slowing down as a quarterback as he has thrown for at least 32 touchdowns in a season every year since 2008.
