With only 253 players taken in the NFL Draft, that leaves several who will try to make rosters as undrafted free agents. Among this year’s group is Max McCaffrey, son of former NFL wide receiver Ed McCaffrey.

The younger McCaffrey, like his father, is also a wide receiver and led the Duke Blue Devils in receptions (52), receiving yards (643) and touchdown receptions (5) last season as a senior. Free to sign with any team, there was hope McCaffrey would join the Broncos, the team his father played nine seasons and won two Super Bowls with.

Instead, Max announced via his Instagram account he chose the AFC West rival Raiders. As you can probably imagine, the decision hit his father pretty hard. Ed posted a great video to his Twitter account of a Broncos balloon being released up into the sky.

On a good note, Ed McCaffrey is fortunate Max isn’t his only football playing son so there remains hope one will wear the blue and orange of the Broncos. Christian is a standout running back at Stanford who was the runner-up in last year’s Heisman Trophy voting. Dylan is one of the top high school quarterback prospects in the nation and has committed to Michigan.
