Eli Manning doesn’t want Giants rookies messing around on their phones

Eli Manning

The New York Giants are set to open their rookie minicamp on Friday, and it sounds like they can count on Eli Manning to play the role of disciplinarian with their incoming players.

On Wednesday, Manning told Tashara Jones of the New York Post that he will be watching to see how committed his new teammates are. One of the ways the 37-year-old veteran will do that is by monitoring their smart phone activity.

“We want to see them working hard and what is their commitment,” Manning said from BTIG Charity Day. “I’ll be watching to see if they’re on their phones, and are they playing video games at night or are they in their playbooks? You want to see the guys that are trying to … learn the key factors. We just focus on who’s trying to do their job.”

The only device Manning wants to see incoming rookies looking at is their team-issued iPad, though one draft pick already had some serious trouble with his.

Manning’s job with the Giants may have been in jeopardy at one point, but it doesn’t sound like he is worried about that this offseason. If and when the team does decide to go in a different direction, perhaps Manning can be retained for his babysitting services.
