Eric Decker may leave Broncos as free agent

Eric DeckerRemember how we said that the Denver Broncos offense may have a drastically different look next season? We already told you that Peyton Manning could retire and that Knowshon Moreno likely won’t be back because he’ll be a free agent. Well you can add Eric Decker to the list as well.

Decker is in the final year of his contract and will be a free agent after the season. He has scored 33 touchdowns in the past three seasons and had 87 catches for 1,288 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. Those are impressive numbers and the kind of stats that will result in him commanding a big contract in the offseason. But will the Broncos be able to match what another team offers him?

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Broncos, who have a glutton of receivers with Demaryius Thomas, Wes Welker and tight end Julius Thomas, view Decker as a No. 2 receiver. That means they probably won’t be able to match the type of offer he’ll receive elsewhere.

Based on what he’s done the past three seasons, don’t you think another team will pay him like a No. 1 receiver? Some teams are desperate for playmakers on offense and one squad will no doubt give him big money. I wouldn’t be thrilled about overpaying Decker the way you know someone will, but he is a good playmaker and proved that even without Manning, he can still find the end zone. If he can score 8 touchdowns with Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow as his quarterbacks, you know he can get it done with anyone back there.
