Falcons post amusing reaction on Twitter to claims of ‘weak’ defense

Falcons-Helmet

The Atlanta Falcons defense is no Legion of Boom. But still, there’s no need to rub it in their faces.

On the heels of the news that the San Francisco 49ers plan to start Blaine Gabbert at quarterback on Sunday against Atlanta, benching woefully ineffective incumbent Colin Kaepernick, early indications are that the timing of the move could be matchup-based.

Kyle McLong of Bay Area Sports Guy reported on Monday that the decision to make the switch was a long time coming, but that a favorable matchup against a seemingly weak Falcons defense spurred San Francisco to wait until Week 9 to make the switch.

The Falcons eventually caught wind of the tweet, and naturally did not take kindly to being lampooned in front of the entire Twittersphere.

The narrative might not even be all that factual anymore as the Atlanta D has seen some steady improvement since last year’s trainwreck in which they ranked dead last in the league in DVOA (per Football Outsiders). While they have given up the eighth-most passing yards in the NFL through eight weeks, they have been quite stingy against the run in 2015, ranking fifth in fewest rushing yards allowed.

Well, I suppose if the Niners wanted to motivate the Falcons into baptizing Gabbert with fire come Sunday, this should probably do the trick.
