Frank Gore seems unhappy with his lack of usage

Frank-Gore-NinersSince Jim Harbaugh took over in San Francisco, the 49ers have remained successful by running the football and playing great defense. They deviated from their usual strategy on Sunday, and the end result was a 23-14 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. After the game, Frank Gore did not seem at all pleased with his team’s offensive approach.

Colin Kaepernick led the way for the Niners on the ground with 13 rushes for 54 yards. Gore totaled just 10 yards on six carries and did not catch a pass. Rookie running back Carlos Hyde rushed three times for 13 yards and a score. According to Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee, Gore was “too upset” to speak with reporters for long on Sunday.

“I can’t talk right now,” he said after answering questions for a minute. “I’m sorry. I can’t talk.”

Gore touched the ball just once in the second half. If the Niners were trying to overcome a huge deficit, that would be understandable. But they were leading 14-6 after two quarters, so the way they abandoned the run was pretty inexplicable. It allowed the Cardinals and their underrated defense to climb back into the game and take the lead despite not forcing any turnovers.

Gore has been a focal point of San Francisco’s offense for several years now. He has carried the ball more than 250 times in each of the past three seasons, but it seems like he is destined to have a much lesser workload this year. The Niners drafted Hyde for several reasons, and one of them is that Gore is 31. While the veteran will have to grow used to sharing touches, giving him just six in a game doesn’t seem like a good plan. Don’t expect it to happen again.
