Giants GM won’t say if Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen turning pro affects Eli Manning

Eli Manning

The New York Giants have the second overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, and they are in search of their next franchise quarterback. With both Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold deciding to turn pro, some have wondered if that makes it less likely that Eli Manning will be back with the team in 2018.

In a Q&A with Steve Serby of the New York Post this week, new Giants general manager Dave Gettleman was asked for his thoughts on Rosen and Darnold declaring for the draft. If he’s excited, he’s not showing it.

“It just deepens the pool,” Gettleman said.

When asked if the two college stars foregoing their senior seasons will have any impact on Manning’s situation, Gettleman said even less.

“Who knows?” he asked.

Gettleman has already indicated that he is open to bringing back Manning as New York’s starting QB in 2018, but the clock it obviously ticking. Whether Manning starts next season or not, the Giants need to find their next signal-caller. Even if they draft Rosen or Darnold, there’s a chance they could have either player ride the bench for a year rather than start as a rookie.

We’ve already heard some speculation that Manning could end up with another team, but Gettleman hasn’t said anything that insinuates the 36-year-old’s time in New York has come to an end.
