Greg Olsen placed on IR, will miss at least eight weeks

Greg Olsen

The Carolina Panthers are expecting Greg Olsen to play again at some point this season, but that is not going to happen for at least two months.

On Tuesday, the Panthers announced that they have placed Olsen on injured reserve. The tight end underwent foot surgery and had a screw inserted to repair a Jones fracture.

“The only thing that he has to do now is heal,” head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion said. “I know Greg will be around and he’ll be involved. He’s a team guy. He’ll try to do everything he can to help this team continue to win.”

Per the NFL’s IR rules, Olsen will be eligible to return to practice in six weeks and game action in eight.

Olsen was spotted wearing a walking boot and using crutches after he left Sunday’s game, so it was safe to assume the injury was serious. He later confirmed to reporters that he suffered a broken foot and said he will miss “a lot of games.” The 32-year-old has been Cam Newton’s favorite target over the past few years, so replacing his production will be a challenge.
