Hue Jackson: RG3 ‘knows he played a big part’ in Washington issues

Robert Griffin

Robert Griffin III wasn’t blameless in his struggles with Washington, and according to his new coach, the quarterback knows it.

Browns coach Hue Jackson is a firm believer in Griffin, and he says the quarterback is aware that he’s made mistakes and is fortunate to be getting a second chance.

“When I looked in his eyes, I see a young man who’s been kicked around a little bit,” Jackson told SI’s Peter King. “When we talked, there was a humility to him. He took ownership of what happened to him, of what he needs to work on to be good. He knows he played a big part in what happened. There are still questions to address and work to be done. He knows. In this league, you don’t always get another chance like this. Here’s one.”

King firmly believes that Griffin’s knee injury cost him dearly. It stunted his development and also meant that he had to spend time rehabbing instead of learning Mike and Kyle Shanahan’s offense, and when Jay Gruden was hired, he preferred Kirk Cousins.

Of course, Griffin has also been accused of being a poor teammate, and at least one team reportedly shied away from him over character concerns. Maybe there’s some truth to that, but if Jackson is to be believed, RG3 has been humbled by the process.
