Jaguars bench Blake Bortles in favor of Cody Kessler

Blake Bortles

The Jacksonville Jaguars have looked like one of the worst teams in football for the better part of a month, and head coach Doug Marrone finally decided on Sunday that he has seen enough from Blake Bortles.

After Jacksonville’s first drive of the second half ended with a Bortles fumble, Cody Kessler trotted out for the Jags’ second drive. They were getting beat 20-0 at the time by the Houston Texans.

The fumble from Bortles was his second lost fumble of the game. Bortles had thrown five interceptions in two games coming into Sunday, and Jacksonville’s offense has simply looked stale.

Not having Leonard Fournette has clearly hurt the Jags, as they relied on the running game and their elite defense en route to the AFC Championship last year. With the exception of a couple games in 2018, Bortles has not justified the three-year extension the Jaguars gave him during the winter.
