Jamaal Charles will not return this season for Chiefs

Jamaal Charles

The Kansas City Chiefs were holding out hope that Jamaal Charles would return this season, but that will not be the case.

The Chiefs on Wednesday designated inside linebacker Justin March-Lillard as their player to return from IR this season. March-Lillard has not played since Week 6 but had 22 tackles before then.

NFL teams only get to designate one player to return from IR after spending at least eight weeks on injured reserve. Since Charles was also on IR, KC designating another player to return means Charles cannot come back this season.

Derrick Johnson suffering a season-ending Achilles injury left the Chiefs thinner at linebacker, which is likely why they designated March-Lillard for return.

Charles was coming back from a torn ACL and still had two knee surgeries after that. He finishes the season with just 40 yards on 12 carries and one touchdown.
