Jared Goff to get first-team reps during bye week

Jared Goff

Los Angeles Rams fans are getting desperate for the team to give rookie quarterback Jared Goff a shot at the starting job, and the No. 1 overall pick may be taking a step in the right direction during the bye week.

Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said he is sticking with Case Keenum in Week 9 after the bye, but he plans to give Goff some practice time with the first team.

“Jared’s going to get some reps, which is a by product of the bye week,” Fisher said, per the team’s official website. “I don’t feel like Case needs the reps Wednesday and early next week, so Jared will get those reps, which is good.”

Fisher acknowledged that Goff will be the team’s starting quarterback at some point, though he did not specify if the rookie will get a chance this season.

“You have to deflect — or be realistic from that standpoint when you’re looking at the quarterback position, because if an offensive lineman gets beat on the snap, and the quarterback gets hit and he’s hurried on the throw — if the throw’s incomplete, it’s not the quarterback’s fault,” he said. “It’s the offensive lineman’s fault. That’s just an example. We just have to get better as a team.”

The majority of the four interceptions Keenum threw against the New York Giants were not his fault, so you can understand why Fisher is defending him. Still, Keenum is not helping the Rams win games. That said, the reports we heard about Goff during training camp did not sound all that promising. The last thing the Rams want to do is ruin his confidence after they invested so much in him.
