Report: Jason Garrett, Cowboys close on five-year extension

Jerry-Jones-Jason-Garrett-Job-Completely-SafeJason Garrett is reportedly close to finalizing a five-year contract extension with the Dallas Cowboys, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

Garrett had by far his best season with the Cowboys in 2014, leading the team to a 12-4 record and its first playoff win since 2009. In Garrett’s first three full seasons as the head coach in Dallas, the Cowboys went 8-8 and missed the playoffs each year.

Say what you will about Jerry Jones, but he is committed to having stability at head coach. In an era where many coaches are being fired after one or two bad seasons, Jones stuck with Garrett during a period of mediocrity and it seems to be paying off.

Some would even argue that the Cowboys should be heading to the NFC Championship Game after they fell victim to one of the most controversial calls of the playoffs last weekend.

The Cowboys found success this season behind a tremendous offensive line that kept Tony Romo upright and was the best run blocking unit in the NFL. Romo had arguably the best season of his career, but he will turn 35 this offseason. Dez Bryant and DeMarco Murray are also heading toward free agency, so the Cowboys need to find a way to keep the core of their offense together.

With all those question marks swirling, it makes sense that Jones would take care of his head coach before tackling the rest.
