Jay Gruden defends Kirk Cousins after bad game

Kirk Cousins had a poor game for the Washington Redskins in a 34-20 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday, but he still has the support of his head coach.

Jay Gruden backed Cousins despite the QB going 25-of-43 for 196 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in the defeat.

“He’s not the only quarterback in history that’s made a poor decision or a poor throw…He’s a young QB. He’ll learn from it,” Gruden said of Cousins after the game, via The Washington Post’s Dan Steinberg.

The Redskins led 13-10 at halftime. Cousins threw both his interceptions in the second half, one coming in Washington territory. The Jets scored touchdowns after both picks, magnifying the mistakes.

Sunday marked Cousins’ fourth multi-interception game of the season, giving him six touchdowns and eight picks for the year — not exactly winning numbers. Even with all the turnovers, Gruden does not sounds like he is planning to make a quarterback change.

“We’ve invested a lot of time in Kirk,” Gruden said via The Post’s Mike Jones.

Washington has other options at QB, including both Colt McCoy and Robert Griffin III. Their choices coupled with Cousins’ turnovers has led many to ask for a change. Maybe the problem is Gruden listened to Mike Shanahan’s words about Cousins a little too carefully.
