Jerry Jones: 2015 Cowboys ‘much less than we paid for’

Jerry Jones

Jerry Jones gave a naturally Jerry Jones answer when asked if the 2015 season was his most disappointing ever.

The Dallas Cowboys, of course, are a miserable 4-10 and will be nowhere near the playoffs. A good part of that is down to the fact that Tony Romo has missed almost all of the season with multiple collarbone injuries, but the team as a whole did not perform.

Jones was asked if this was the most disappointing season the Cowboys have endured during his ownership. Try to make sense of his response.

“Well, I would say that relative to the players, relative to what I think of this coaching staff, which I understand the criticism that we’re under right now,” Jones 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, via Eye on Football. “But when I look at the players, what I thought we could be defensively, and then what we certainly were just a few short — I almost called it months ago, but it was last year — and you can’t live in the past.”

Is Jones admitting that the roster construction was flawed and he’s known it for a while? Anyway:

“But when I looked at what we had put together on the field, maybe we were going to be struggling in those first four ballgames, maybe we might split those first four ballgames,” Jones continued. “I’m giving you my thoughts. But once we got [Greg] Hardy out there, once we got [Rolando] McClain out there, once we got a few games underneath our belt, I thought we were going to be a whale of a football team.

“And, yes, it’s far different and much less than I had anticipated, much less than we paid for, much less than we put the money out there for, if that counts. We put it in the places that I thought we had a chance to get better, get where we needed to get better, particularly in the pass rush. I thought we would be pretty dynamic in the pass rush, and certainly whether it be field position or whether it be what we’ve asked them to do, we just haven’t been what we thought we’d be.”

Expectations were high for the Cowboys coming into 2015, but they’ve proven flawed all around. His next steps should be interesting.
