Jerry Jones: Cowboys may never have QB situation sorted out

Dak Prescott

For obvious reasons, the Dallas Cowboys refuse to speculate on whether Tony Romo will be the team’s starting quarterback when he is cleared to return from a back injury. Team owner Jerry Jones initially said Romo will always be the team’s No. 1 quarterback, but he has since pumped the brakes. So when will the quarterback situation become clearer?

Perhaps never.

During his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan Tuesday, Jones said the Cowboys see no reason to commit to Romo or Dak Prescott.

“We probably are never going to have this sorted out,” he said, per Todd Archer of ESPN.com. “We’re going to play this by ear.”

The Cowboys are 7-1 with Prescott as their starter and have not lost since Week 1. The best way to keep the drama to a minimum is to say Romo still needs more time to recover, which makes it seem like there is no controversy. Should Prescott lose a game or two and start to struggle, Romo might suddenly be ready to return.

Some recent comments Prescott made indicate he has changed the way he feels about being the Cowboys’ starter. There’s simply no way you can bench Prescott with the way the team has performed, and Jones knows that. Having said that, it’ll be a great situation to have a proven veteran like Romo waiting on the sidelines if Prescott loses the magic.
