Could Jets use Nick Foles as leverage against Ryan Fitzpatrick?

Ryan Fitzpatrick Jets

The New York Jets may soon have another way to nudge Ryan Fitzpatrick into making some sort of decision.

With the two sides still at an impasse on a new contract, there is some speculation that the Jets may want a decision as soon as possible and will either look to force the issue or look to other options – perhaps both.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini wonders if the Jets will take a look at Rams quarterback Nick Foles, who many feel will be released. Foles would be the best quarterback on the Jets’ roster right now, but more importantly, if they still want Fitzpatrick, they could engage in a public flirtation with Foles to press the issue.

Ultimately, such a situation would ensure that the Jets have more leverage than Fitzpatrick. The quarterback’s problem all along has been that there just aren’t any other suitors that would pay him what he wants, so the Jets can just hang tight and offer the quarterback less than he wants with the hope that Fitzpatrick will eventually give in. So far, he hasn’t been willing.

The Jets have already tried to use a free agent quarterback for Fitzpatrick leverage to little success. Of course, if this report is true, perhaps moving for Foles could be a legitimate option and not just a leverage play.
