The New York Jets missed the playoffs this season, but that didn’t stop them from celebrating in the locker room after a win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Rex Ryan may or may not have been coaching for his job over the last month of the season — a stretch in which his team went 3-1 and lost a tough game on the road to a very good Carolina Panthers team. Ryan will now be keeping his job through next season, and the players are ecstatic.
After New York’s win over Miami, Jets owner Woody Johnson announced that the team has decided to bring Rex back for 2014. When Johnson made the announcement in the locker room, the players went crazy and jumped all over Ryan.
When reports surfaced that Cleveland Browns coach Rob Chudzinski is going to be fired, one player referred to him as a “douche” who is not trusted by several players. Similar stuff has been said about former Tampa Bay Bucs head coach Greg Schiano, who was fired on Monday. Ryan is different in that sense.
Players legitimately enjoy playing for Ryan. They want to win for him, and they proved that on Sunday by beating the Dolphins in a game where Miami should have been playing with incredible urgency. Johnson made the final call on keeping Rex, but it was really the players’ decision.
