Report: Jets to target Teddy Bridgewater if they miss out on Kirk Cousins

Teddy Bridgewater

The New York Jets are expected to go all-in on trying to sign Kirk Cousins, but they need contingency plans in place if they are unable to land the star quarterback. That’s where Teddy Bridgewater could come into play.

According to SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano, the Jets will likely look to bring back Josh McCown and sign Teddy Bridgewater if they miss out on Cousins. They could also use their first-round pick — No. 6 overall — on one of the quarterbacks in this year’s deep class.

Vacchiano notes that the Jets believe they can offer Cousins more money than any other team, though it’s unclear if they’d give him the fully guaranteed three-year contract he is reportedly seeking. They might have to if they want to distance themselves from the Minnesota Vikings, who can offer a better chance to contend for a championship.

If the Jets signed both McCown and Bridgewater, they would likely hold an open competition for their starting job in training camp. Even though Bridgewater has missed most of the last two seasons because of the devastating knee injury he suffered in 2016, there are reportedly multiple teams interested in him as a starter. He may be able to find more guaranteed playing time elsewhere.
