Jets trade Christian Hackenberg to Raiders for conditional pick

Jon Gruden may be ready to start flexing his quarterback-building muscles on a new project.

The New York Jets announced on Tuesday that they have traded Christian Hackenberg to the Oakland Raiders for a conditional 2019 7th-round pick.

Hackenberg was a second-round pick by the Jets (No. 51 overall) in 2016 despite his regression in college at Penn State. He was always buried on the Jets’ depth chart and didn’t show much, which is why he has yet to throw a pass in an NFL game. He also changed his throwing motion without telling the team.

The Jets had several quarterbacks on their roster with the draft pick of Sam Darnold coupled with Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater, so they didn’t have a lot of use for Hackenberg. Now he goes to Oakland where he’ll compete with EJ Manuel and Connor Cook behind Derek Carr.
