Joe Theismann: Tony Romo should retire

Tony Romo Cowboys

Joe Theismann has a pretty strong opinion on what he thinks Tony Romo should do. In fact, the former Super Bowl champion thinks Romo should retire. And it’s all because of health reasons.

Theismann joined ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown” ahead of the Giants-Vikings game as part of the show’s “Legends” series. The former Washington QB shared his thoughts on Romo, including what he told the Cowboys QB.

“When I saw him play in Seattle, I saw a guy in harm’s way,” said Theismann. “When you can’t protect yourself at that position, that concerns me. He’s going to get hit. He’s going to go to the ground. He’s going to hit that shoulder. You don’t know what that next element is. I’m worried about Tony the man.”

Theismann’s concern for Romo’s health is a legitimate one. Romo is 36 and suffered two broken clavicles last year. He also broke his clavicle in 2010, and he suffered back injuries in both 2013 and 2014. The latest back injury suffered in the preseason is expected to keep Romo out until Week 8.

The Cowboys have said that all is looking good with Romo’s recovery so far, and owner Jerry Jones has been insistent that the team belongs to Romo despite the emergence of rookie Dak Prescott. But there is some chatter that Prescott could take Romo’s job.

Even though some like Theismann may recommend Romo retire, we doubt the longtime Cowboys quarterback will want to go out this way.
