John Elway calls Broncos’ defense ‘soft’

John Elway

John Elway has once again leveled a serious criticism against his Denver Broncos.

Elway spoke on the radio with Orange and Blue 760 on Monday and said his defense has gotten “soft” when asked how to fix the run defense.

“You know that’s a good question,” Elway said, via The Athletic. “Obviously we’ve gotten very soft in there and to give up the amount of yardage we have in the last two weeks has been tough. We’re not playing well inside and obviously we’ve played some good teams. The Rams are a good rushing team, Gurley is a very, very good back. But that is a big, big concern right now and we have to figure out how to get that solved.”

The Broncos defense allowed 270 rushing yards to the Rams in Week 6. The week before they allowed 323 rushing yards in a loss to the Jets. That’s not going to get the job done. Denver now has the worst rushing defense in the league, and a four-game losing streak to match.

Elway called his team “soft” last year too. You have to wonder how long he’ll stick with a head coach who has presided over two years of “soft” teams.
