John Madden undergoes open-heart surgery

John-Madden-NFLThe NFL announced on Thursday that legendary coach and announcer John Madden recently underwent open-heart surgery to repair blockages. The procedure was successful and he is expected to make a full recovery.

“I spoke to John yesterday,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “He sounds great, but is frustrated about being on injured reserve for the time being. He is anxious to return to action soon doing the important work he does for our game. He’s a tremendous fountain of ideas and we can’t wait to get him back. We are all pleased to know that John’s procedure was successful and wish him a speedy recovery.”

Madden, 79, currently serves as co-chair with Ronnie Lott for the NFL Safety Advisory Panel. He is also the chair of the Coaches Subcommittee to the Competition Committee.

Madden is one of the most influential people in NFL history, and we always enjoy some of his takes on the game’s biggest stars. We wish him the best in his recovery.
