John Mara says Giants have ‘lost some credibility as an organization’

Tom-Coughlin-John-Mara

The Giants are one of the proudest and most storied franchises in the NFL. However, after a couple of under .500 seasons, John Mara isn’t happy with the current perception of his team.

After a 6-10 record this season, Tom Coughlin stepped down as Giants head coach this week. While he is now gone, general manager Jerry Reese will remain with the organization and is tasked with turning around the fortunes of the team.

On Tuesday, Mara spoke to the state of his team and it’s clear he wants it to change sooner rather than later.

“Let’s be honest, we have lost some credibility as an organization,” Mara said at Tom Coughlin’s press conference, via ESPN. “When you have three losing years in a row like that, you face a lot of criticism, and a lot of it is deserved. And it is up to us now to turn that around and get back to where I think we should be,” he continued.

The Giants last made the playoffs in 2011, although they won the Super Bowl that year. That is their only appearance in the postseason since 2008.

While injuries played a part in New York’s disappointing season, it was also apparent the team didn’t have the talent to match up with other teams at times. That will be what Reese will attempt to remedy.

The good thing for the Giants is there isn’t a dominant team in their division, although the Cowboys will be better with a healthy Tony Romo next season. It’ll be an important offseason for the Giants, for sure. The first order of business is selecting a new head coach to help spearhead the turnaround.
