Julian Edelman in pads for Patriots practice, off PUP list

Julian Edelman

Julian Edelman seems to be progressing well in his recovery from multiple foot surgeries.

Edelman was injured in mid-November last season and only played in nine games for the New England Patriots as a result, though he did return for the playoffs. He had two foot surgeries since the initial injury and opened training camp on the physically unable to perform list. But Edelman has been doing drills and running routes at practice, suggesting that his return was somewhat imminent.

On Sunday, Edelman was in pads for practice, though he did not participate in the team’s scrimmage, according to The Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe. Being in pads means he will not start the season on the PUP list.

Edelman posted 1,056 receiving yards in 2013 and 972 in 2014 and has been one of Tom Brady’s top targets the past three years. The Patriots will hope he is ready to go for Week 1. Between the news that he was in pads Sunday and how he looked working out with the Red Sox last month, all signs seem to point to him being close to full strength.
