The Minnesota Vikings are Kirk Cousins’ top choice in free agency if they’re able to offer him the money he’s looking for, according to a report.
The Redskins trading for Alex Smith earlier this week signaled the end of the Cousins era in Washington. Cousins is likely to be highly sought after by teams desperate to upgrade at quarterback. The Broncos, Jaguars, and Browns could be among the teams bidding for Cousins’ services.
However, if the Vikings come calling with an offer in the same ballpark, they may be the winner of the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes. Minnesota’s KFAN 1003 reports that Cousins prefers a move to the Vikings with all other factors being relatively equal.
KFAN host Paul Allen says he received a text message from a source who told him the following:
“Listening to you, I’m told Cousins has been telling people this week the Vikings are #1 with a bullet on his preference list. If offers are similar he’s taking the Vikings.”
That is big. But the question is what will the Vikings do given the unusual amount of uncertainty they have surrounding the quarterback position.
Case Keenum, who led Minnesota to the playoffs, is a free agent at season’s end, but sounds like he has unfinished business with the Vikings. After playing in just two games, Sam Bradford was placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury. He will also soon be a free agent. Then there’s Teddy Bridgewater, who began the season recovering from a knee injury that cost him all of last season. Despite playing in just one game this season, Bridgewater expects to be a starting quarterback in 2018.
The Vikings clearly have difficult decisions to make this offseason. The apparent interest by Cousins adds another layer to an already intriguing storyline that will be worth following until it is resolved. The Vikings may also be facing some serious competition from a notable AFC team as well.
