Kirk Cousins: This year’s turnovers not as bad as last year’s

Kirk Cousins

The Redskins are off to a 2-4 start and the groans around the nation’s capital are growing louder with each Kirk Cousins turnover.

During an interview on 106.7 The Fan on Monday, Cousins attempted to explain how each interception is different, despite looking bad to those watching at home and in the stands.

“I think every pick is its own entity,” Cousins told 106.7 The Fan. “I mean, you can look at the results and say, ‘Okay, too many picks.’ But every interception has its own reason and its own explanation, so they’re all different.”

“I don’t feel like the turnovers this year have been quite as awful as they were last year,” Cousins said. “Some of the interceptions I threw last year were just very poor reads, very poor throws, very poor decisions, and while some of the interceptions this year have been that, I don’t think it’s been quite as many.”

Degree and nature of the interceptions aside, Cousins has eight of them in six games so far this season. Only Peyton Manning (10) and Matthew Stafford (9) have thrown more. Taking care of the football is of paramount importance and, thus far, Cousins has been more generous with the football than he and the organization would prefer.

It doesn’t appear at this time Cousins is in any danger of losing his grasp on the starting quarterback job. However, he has now thrown two interceptions in a game four times this season (including Sunday versus the Jets). Washington has lost all four of those games.

Head coach Jay Gruden mentioned the wind when addressing the media after Sunday’s game, which came off to many as him making an excuse for Cousins’ poor play. If the turnovers continue, regardless of how they happen, Gruden may run out of ways to stick up for his quarterback.
