Marc Trestman starting Jimmy Clausen to try saving his job?

Marc Trestman

Is the decision by the Bears to start Jimmy Clausen over Jay Cutler a last-ditch effort by Marc Trestman to save his job?

A report on Tuesday said the Bears are likely to fire Trestman after the season. There has been fighting among teammates, coaches criticizing players anonymously, while both the offense and defense have been disappointments.

Since Trestman’s fate is likely sealed, there might be one way for him to prove his worth: winning with a quarterback other than Cutler.

That’s the speculation of NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who wrote the following on Twitter: “One way Marc Trestman stays employed by the Bears this season? Win with a QB other than Jay Cutler. Now is his chance.”

I highly doubt that Trestman keeps his job regardless, but coaching up Clausen so that he looks good against the Detroit Lions would reflect well up on Trestman. Already viewed as a strong offensive mind, Trestman would look even better if he’s helped Clausen put up good numbers, in addition to Josh McCown and arguably Cutler.
