Martellus Bennett felt ‘disrespected’ by Rex Ryan

Martellus-BennettThe Chicago Bears have arguably the NFL’s best wide receiver tandem in Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. They also have a tight end who is proving he can be a threat, and that tight end would appreciate if Rex Ryan would show him a little recognition.

After Chicago’s win over the New York Jets on Monday night, Martellus Bennett said he felt “disrespected” by Ryan not praising him as much as he praised Marshall and Jeffery.

“Today I felt a little disrespected,” Bennett told reporters, via Jeff Dickerson of ESPNChicago.com. “We [the Bears] played a highlight video, and in the highlight video, Rex is talking about [how the Bears] have monsters on the outside with [receivers] Brandon [Marshall] and Alshon [Jeffery], and he was like, ‘Oh, yeah, the tight end is a big dude.’

“I feel like when he talks about me he should talk about me with enthusiasm as well. He was just kind of monotone when he mentioned me. I was kind of [upset] about that. I feel like when somebody talks about me they should use some enthusiasm.”

In case you couldn’t tell, Martellus thinks pretty highly of himself. While he hauled in two touchdowns against the Jets and now has four touchdowns in three games, Bennett isn’t exactly Jimmy Graham. I doubt Rex meant to disrespect Bennett by focusing on two of the best wide receivers in the game, but good for Bennett for using it as motivation.

“Before the game, I told (Ryan) the next time he mentioned me he should use some enthusiasm,” Bennett added. “He just kind of laughed it off.”

I would have laughed it off, too. And after Bennett scored two touchdowns, I probably still would have laughed it off. There was nothing wrong or disrespectful about what Rex said — or didn’t say.
